June 25, 2024 Canadian UPDATE: AI in Healthcare – Your family, the system, and the Canadian responsibility
Thank you for continuing to support your loved one, whether at home, at the hospital bedside, or next door in your neighbourhood. Because of the caregiving you provide, we have stronger families, stronger communities as a result, and a healthier society. Thank you.
Collision Conference wrapped up in Toronto last week; it is clear to me that human curiosity, and private sector motivation, are growing stronger. Especially AI innovation in healthcare.
What does the evolution of AI in healthcare mean for your family? What can AI offer to Home Care, to better support your loved one? What can AI provide to streamline broken systems, and what does this seismic shift mean in our country’s regulatory space?
As it applies to caregiving for you loved one, there are a number of recommendations, in alignment with the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA), that I have for you to consider when interacting with healthcare providers and healthcare organizations.
-Ask the healthcare provider how AI is being used at their organization to improve delivery of services to ultimately benefit your loved one and your family.
-Be curious about the risks of AI to your family; name exactly what you are most concerned about when meeting with healthcare providers. This is not a fear-based exercise, but a thoughtful risk assessment and risk management conversation. For example, “I am hesitant to use AI in the care of my family member because it is a new technology that I’m unfamiliar with,” or “I am concerned about privacy breach or misuse.
-Do your research, or “follow” those who are thinking about the same questions you are. Family members, healthcare providers and system participants, and all Canadians have a moral and ethical obligation to determine their individual roles as AI in healthcare is developing at a rapid pace.
Once again, thank you for supporting your loved one. Because of what you do, your family is stronger and so are wider communities and society.
